The Puyallup Fish Hatchery sits on over 80 acres and welcomes visitors year-round during daylight hours. The onsite Educational Center is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm and staffed by volunteers from the Puyallup Historical Hatchery Foundation.
The hatchery, operated by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, opened in 1949 to raise and supply trout to area lakes. The hatchery began a new chapter in 2012 when the community rallied against the facility's proposed lease for commercial operations.
Planned renovations include upgrading the facility and its water supply system, and Coho and Chinook rearing has been added to the trout production to help restore regional salmon runs. In the fall of 2016, the Puyallup School District, in partnership with the Puyallup Historical Hatchery Foundation and the Department of Fish and Wildlife, began utilizing the hatchery to teach environmental and watershed science to 4th grade students.
Each October, the hatchery hosts a Salmon Homecoming to welcome the salmon returning to Clarks Creek. Music, tours and games make this a fun and educational event for all ages.
